About this lesson
If you have a large dataset, it’s easy to get overwhelmed with too much information. Sorting and filtering help you reduce large amounts of data so that you can focus on only the relevant data.
Quick reference
Sort and Filter using Tables
The big advantage of using tables to sort and filter is that Excel regards the range as a set and you cannot corrupt data by sorting only one column.
Creating a table adds auto filter buttons to the rows that you can use to filter or sort.
Auto filter
- Remember to clear the filter before you do a new filter, otherwise you do the filter only on the already filtered values.
Text filters
- Find text options on the dropdown list or search for parts of text in the search box.
Number filters
- Number filters can search for values larger, smaller, equal to.
- Top 10 or bottom 10 can be changed to any value you would like
Sort
- The sort function is limited to sorting by one column at a time, if you need to sort by more than one column, you need to use the sort button on the Data tab.
