Topic
The Sidebar.
When to use
The Sidebar (also referred to as the Left Panel) shows you the broadest level of categorization of your Evernote documents.
Instructions
What you see on the Sidebar are:
- Shortcuts - In this area you can drag any Notes, Notebooks or Tags to which you want quick access. If at any point you want to remove an item from Shortcuts, right-click and choose “Remove from Shortcuts” option.
- Recent Notes
- Notes, Notebooks, and Tags icons serve as shortcuts to respective lists.
- Atlas organizes your Notes by geographical location where they were created. For the most part all Notes carry geographical location data. That’s the data that Atlas uses to “display” your Notes on a map.
- Upgrade option—a handy shortcut to upgrade if/when you want to upgrade
- Recent Chats shows you the name of the person(s) you chatted with last. It also shows you notifications about received, but unread chats.
- Work Chat gives you quick access to Evernote’s collaboration area. This is how you can share individual Notes and entire Notebooks; chat with one or several Evernote users at once.
You can customize the Sidebar, minimize it, or hide it altogether.
To customize your Sidebar, go View > Sidebar Options. You can uncheck any items you don’t want to see on your Sidebar. You also have a choice between the light and dark sidebar options.
If you want to minimize your Sidebar drag the divider between the Sidebar and middle area all the way to the left. You will no longer see your shortcuts. Only the icons of the features you chose to still see on the Sidebar will remain visible.
To hide your Sidebar go View > Hide Sidebar.

- 00:08 First, I'm going to show you the main elements, and
- 00:11 after that we'll talk about different ways you can customize it.
- 00:16 So, lets take a look.
- 00:18 At the top of your Sidebar, you will see the Shortcuts area.
- 00:22 This is where you get to pin Notes,Notebooks or
- 00:27 even Tags for quick access.
- 00:30 In order to create a shortcut for
- 00:32 our elements, simply drag it into the Shortcuts area.
- 00:36 You just saw me dragging there a Note.
- 00:38 You can do the same thing with Notebooks, and the same thing with Tags.
- 00:46 Shortcuts are not permanent.
- 00:47 So, whenever you want to unpin something, simply right-click and Remove.
- 00:54 Right-click and Remove.
- 00:57 Right below the shortcuts, you will see your most recent notes.
- 01:01 And right below that you will see shortcuts to entire lists.
- 01:07 Your list of Notes, your list of Notebooks, and Tags.
- 01:14 Right, below Tags is the Atlas.
- 01:17 Atlas organizes your notes by geographical location where the Notes were created.
- 01:25 Basically, every Note carries geographical location data.
- 01:29 And this is what allows Evernote to Organize your Notes on a map.
- 01:37 Right below Atlas is the Upgrade option and
- 01:41 in the bottom left corner is Work Chat.
- 01:44 Work Chat is Evernote's collaboration area.
- 01:47 This is where you get to chat with other Evernote users.
- 01:51 You can chat with individuals, you can chat with groups,
- 01:55 you can share with them Notes and Notebooks.
- 01:59 So ,if you want to have a conversation with someone,
- 02:02 this is the place you will come.
- 02:06 So, these are the main elements of The Sidebar.
- 02:10 If you want to modify it, come to view, Sidebar Options.
- 02:14 On the drop down, you will see that you can uncheck certain
- 02:20 elements and Evernote will remove them from your Sidebar.
- 02:27 Mac users also have an option to change the color of the Sidebar, so
- 02:32 you have a choice between light and dark Sidebar.
- 02:38 What you can also do with this Sidebar is you can minimize it,
- 02:41 if you drag this divider all the way to the right you will be left with
- 02:46 these icons that will give you access to your Notes, Notebooks and Tags.
- 02:52 And you can see that you can also add Atlas and Work Chat.
- 02:58 So, this your Sidebar and this is the place that shows you
- 03:06 the broadest level of categorization of Evernote documents.
- 03:10 So take a look and play with it and
- 03:12 see what would be the most convenient for your setup.
