Organizing Notebooks.
When to use
If you’d like to structure your Notebooks so that you can quickly find what you are looking for, it’s best to organize them.
Instructions
Evernote doesn’t force on you a specific structure for your Notebooks. Since Notes and Notebooks resemble documents and folders, you can follow the same approach you use to organize your other digital storage tools.
If you go to your list of Notebooks (Sidebar > Notebooks), you’ll see that Evernote can sort your existing Notebooks for you by:
- Owner
- Name
- Note Count and
- Updated
Other than that, you have the option to create your own personal classification system:
- Stacks will become your folders—main categories
- Notebooks—subfolders or subcategories, and
- Notes—individual documents
Just remember that with Stacks and Notebooks you can go only one level deep, i.e., you cannot create Stacks inside Stacks.
To create a structure that works for you, determine (if you are new to Evernote) or examine information you are already storing in your Evernote to decide on the main categories. They will help you decide on the names of the highest-ranking categories — the ones that all the smaller bits of information will fall under.
For example, you can have Stacks like:
- Travel
- Food
- Kids
- Household
- Marketing
- Clients
- Administrative
Each larger category will contain more specific Notebooks:
- Travel:
- 2016-Greece
- 2015-Thailand
- 2014-Belgium
- 2013-New Zealand
Or:
- Marketing:
- Blogging
- Interviewing
- Public Speaking
- Social media
- Vlogging
Each Notebook in its turn will contain individual Notes.
To create a Stack, drag one Notebook on top of the other. Rename it to give it an appropriate name.
You are never stuck with a structure. If you want to reorganize your Notebooks, delete existing Stacks to “release” your Notebooks and create different Stacks (see previous lesson).
