1. When doing a manual calculation of critical path, what is the indication that a task is on the critical path?
If that task is on the path with the most number of tasks, it is a critical path task.
The task has the longest duration estimate of any task in the project.
The task float value is zero.
2. What is the value of doing both a forward pass and backward pass on the critical path calculations?
The duration of the critical path is the sum of the two passes, only doing one pass will create an incorrect critical path estimate.
The backward pass calculation is a double-check to make certain that no errors were made in the forward pass calculations.
Comparing the results from the two passes allows you to calculate float.
3. In the project shown below, if the duration of Task D is reduced by half to 4 days, what is the impact to the critical path and the project duration?
The critical path is Tasks A-B-D-F, but the project duration has been reduced to 20 days.
It is impossible to tell from this diagram what the impact will be. The project schedule boundaries as listed in the Project Charter are needed to establish critical path and set the end date.
All tasks are now critical and the project duration is reduced to 20 days.
