Quick reference
Ribbon - Review
The Review ribbon provides Translation, a Thesaurus, and a Dictionary.
When to use
Writing creative script is important and sometimes hard. The Review ribbon provides those reference manuals we all used to have on our bookshelves.
Instructions
Follow along with the video for an introduction to the Publisher 2016 Review ribbon elements. This includes:
- Spellcheck – no more typos and misspellings
- Research – dictionary
- Thesaurus – look up similar words
- Translation – use international words
- 00:04 All right, it's time to circle back to some text functions, and
- 00:07 that is on the Review ribbon.
- 00:08 This is where you find your spell-check, your research, your thesaurus,
- 00:12 your translation, and your language settings.
- 00:15 So very quickly, down below, you can see I've got some red underlines,
- 00:18 those are misspelled words.
- 00:19 Now, I could right-click each one of them, and handle them individually but
- 00:23 how about we just have the computer do it in one fell swoop?
- 00:26 So that is on the Review ribbon and we have this Spelling button right over here.
- 00:29 Notice the tool tip popped up and says F7.
- 00:31 So if this is something you're going to use a lot,
- 00:34 which you should by the way use this often.
- 00:37 Go ahead and tap your F7 on your upper keyboard.
- 00:41 So I'm going to click spelling, the box shows up.
- 00:44 And I can move that off to the side.
- 00:46 Now I can handle each one of these individually, or
- 00:50 you hit the Change All just in case I spelt it wrong twice.
- 00:54 And in this case, we're already done so
- 00:56 we're going to move on from our spell check.
- 00:58 Our next one is our thesaurus.
- 01:00 I would like to find a better word for the word Headline.
- 01:03 So I'm going to click on Thesaurus.
- 01:04 Now Research, I should pause and go to Research first, so Research.
- 01:08 We'll bring this up and
- 01:09 Research shows me that the last thing I used was Translation.
- 01:12 Well, I'd like to look up the dictionary.
- 01:14 What is the definition of the word headline?
- 01:16 And there is a dictionary definition right there.
- 01:20 Now the drop down arrow allows me to go to Thesaurus,
- 01:22 allows me to go to Translation, allows me to go online.
- 01:26 But instead, I want to use the individual buttons just to show you as an example.
- 01:30 But honestly, it's your personal preference.
- 01:32 You can always stay in Research and do all the work there.
- 01:34 So I've got Headline up here, I already know what it means.
- 01:37 Now I'm going to go find a better word for it.
- 01:39 So that is the Thesaurus.
- 01:41 Now, in this case, it showed me Frontpage, Front-page, Important, Significant.
- 01:45 Well, I like Important so I'm going to hit the drop down arrow.
- 01:48 Keep your eyes on the highlighted word off to the left.
- 01:51 When I hit Insert, it'll automatically replace it.
- 01:54 Click, there it goes.
- 01:55 I didn't have to type, so I am a happy customer.
- 01:58 All right, let's keep going.
- 01:59 I'd like to translate Lead Story Important, so
- 02:03 I'm going to translate that selected text.
- 02:05 So I'll click the Translate button, and
- 02:07 it's asking me permission to go out online.
- 02:09 Yes, that is fine.
- 02:11 Notice it went to my Research task pane.
- 02:13 Just for a moment, I'm going to close my Thesaurus task pane.
- 02:17 Here we go.
- 02:17 Now, the translation, it's trying to translate from English to Welsh.
- 02:21 That's fine, that's the last one I used.
- 02:23 How about if I want to go from English to Spanish?
- 02:27 So I can click that, hit my little arrow, and see if it will translate.
- 02:31 And generally, there it is right here.
- 02:34 So I went from English to, I accidentally clicked Swedish.
- 02:38 That's fine.
- 02:39 Here we go. I could highlight these words right here.
- 02:42 I don't have to highlight, but I could copy paste or
- 02:45 just hit the cute little Insert button right here.
- 02:47 Now keep your eyes on the words to the left that are highlighted.
- 02:50 I'll click Insert, click.
- 02:51 There we go.
- 02:52 I didn't have to type them in there.
- 02:54 So that's always a good experience when we don't have to type anything.
- 02:58 Now, it's really easy to translate single words or phrases.
- 03:02 It's a different story to translate an entire text.
- 03:04 If you were going to translate all of these, I would copy it all,
- 03:07 go out to the Microsoft Translator online and
- 03:10 have that translate the entire document for you.
- 03:13 All right, the last thing we want to do is set our language preferences.
- 03:16 So on the Review button, under Language, we can set our proofing language or
- 03:21 our Language Preferences.
- 03:22 I'll go ahead and set my proofing language.
- 03:24 So I've got mine to proof for the spelling of the English United States.
- 03:29 Well, there's all kinds of them.
- 03:30 You just have to scroll through here to choose which spellings you would like
- 03:35 your proofing and your spelling to respond to in your translators to respond to.
- 03:39 So that's it for now.
- 03:41 Please get into your Review ribbon.
- 03:42 Use these often and you'll have a great finished product,
- 03:46 especially when you use the spell check button.
