Use Multiple Windows
Learn about using multiple windows to view the same or various documents side-by-side.
When to use
The option to View Multiple Windows will become a valuable tool as you become an advanced MS Word user. Whenever you need to compare two or more documents, or simply compare far-away pages in one document, the Windows features will help you work efficiently.
Instructions
Click the VIEW ribbon, and in the WINDOW group, observe the available options.
Click View Side by Side to view multiple documents simultaneously. When two documents are open, you can synchronize the scrolling (or not).
Use the Split Window button to split the view of one document into two sections:
Click Switch Windows to quickly switch back and forth from one document to another.
Arrange All windows will horizontally align all open documents or windows.
- 00:05 There's a nice feature about Microsoft Word.
- 00:07 So if you have multiple documents open, you can actually move them side by side or
- 00:12 view one on one monitor and one on the other.
- 00:15 But what if you're only working with one monitor?
- 00:17 You don't have that luxury of the second.
- 00:20 Well under the view ribbon, you can click I'm sorry the switch windows button.
- 00:25 First of all the switch windows allows you to switch back and
- 00:28 forth to another open document.
- 00:30 I've colored one green and one red just so
- 00:33 you can see that I am actually switching documents.
- 00:36 Then we have this feature right here called View Side by Side.
- 00:40 When I activate that, it actually adjusts the windows and
- 00:44 I'm going to go ahead and get the reset window positioned so
- 00:48 you can see that they are still side by side on the same screen.
- 00:52 They've kind of gotten a little larger than the video is showing.
- 00:55 But at least you can see that certainly they are side by side.
- 00:59 Because they are sharing a small screen space, look what happened to the ribbon.
- 01:03 It shrunk up a little bit, but don't let that affect you because I can still
- 01:07 tell the one that's active is right over here cuz the buttons are on it.
- 01:12 And so basically these little buttons if you float your mouse,
- 01:15 it will tell you what it's doing.
- 01:17 I'm still on view side by side.
- 01:19 It is still on.
- 01:20 And let's see, this one is synchronized scrolling and
- 01:24 this one is reset Window position.
- 01:26 So basically, you can scroll through these, you can turn off the view side
- 01:31 by side and it will go back to normal and reset itself.
- 01:35 But synchronized scrolling, so if you need them to scroll at the same time,
- 01:40 you can do that.
- 01:41 In this particular one, where it says exercise use multiple windows.
- 01:46 I've got page 1 and text is on page 1 and
- 01:49 I want to compare it to text that is on Page 7.
- 01:52 Well that means I'm going to have to scroll,
- 01:54 scroll, scroll down to Page 7 or I could just use the split button right here.
- 01:59 Again, on the View ribbon, click on Split.
- 02:01 When I activate that, It shows me this same document, but
- 02:05 it's been split into two.
- 02:07 And so right now, I'm on page one of seven.
- 02:10 I can go ahead and click on that, turn on my navigation pane and
- 02:14 I can absolutely go down to page seven on the bottom.
- 02:18 Okay, see so I'm on page seven.
- 02:21 And when I click right here it says, this is text on page seven.
- 02:24 And I'm looking right above it, the text on page one.
- 02:27 Notice when I clicked up here, page one showed up on the navigation pane.
- 02:31 When I click down here, page 7 shows up on the Navigation pane.
- 02:35 So, it helps to have your navigation pane on at the same time that you're using
- 02:39 those splits.
- 02:40 So, whenever you've got the split on, that button turns now into Remove Split and so
- 02:45 that's how you would turn that off, all right?
- 02:47 And so, our next feature would be the Arrange All.
- 02:50 If you you wanna arrange both separate documents on the same screen,
- 02:54 we just hit the Arrange All and then a new window will also open yet
- 02:59 another window for you to arrange with those.
- 03:02 But by golly the View section This windows area helps you contain how
- 03:07 many windows you have open, and it basically helps you be in control of
- 03:12 what window you're going to be looking at when you need the work done.
- 03:17 So use those features, practice with them.
- 03:20 The important thing is that you know they're there,
- 03:23 otherwise you would just struggle with switching from one window to the next.
- 03:28 So, thank you.
