Comments and Citing

When your writing is collaborative or stems from third party content, Word can help by offering options such as targeted commenting and citing formats of all kinds. These features can be accessed by even the most inexperienced Word user, and doing so is incredibly efficient using the shortcuts within this section.

Insert a comment Add a comment to any portion of your Word doc using this shortcut after having highlighted or selected the text you want to attach the comment to. These can be viewed by those you have shared your document with and then deleted once read. Alt C Option A
Toggle change tracker If you would like to keep track of the changes being made to your Word document, use this shortcut to active this feature. You will be able to review, in chronologic order, all changes made to your doc by you or a peer. Ctrl Shift E Shift E
Go the beginning of a comment Working with lengthily comments on your Word doc? Use this shortcut to jump with ease to the very start of the comment itself. This is a Windows only feature. Home Shift

Insert a footnote Creating footnotes is one method of creating side notes on your work or adding works sited. This shortcut will add a superscripted number at the location of your cursor, and the same number (with an editable description) will be found at the bottom of the page you are working on. This shortcut will add a superscripted number at the location of your cursor, and the same number (with an editable description) will be found at the end of your Word doc all together. Go to next footnote Navigate forward within your Word doc to the next footnote you have created. Unfortunately this shortcut is only available in Word 2016 on Windows. Alt Shift >
