Fields
Fields within Word can help you add useful information to your document in seconds. Each of these shortcuts allows you to insert a unique field such as date, time and page number.
| Shortcut | Windows | Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Insert date field Quickly add the current date to your Word doc using this field shortcut. Word will insert the date in the format 1/22/12 to the spot of your cursor. | Alt Shift D | Control Shift D |
| Insert time field Insert the current time in 12 hour format using this shortcut. Unfortunately Word only provides the time without seconds, so this shortcut is less useful in scientific circumstances where such details are necessaery. | Alt Shift T | Control Shift T |
| Insert page field Add to your Word document the current page number with this shortcut. Word will place the page number on which your cursor current lays. | Alt Shift P | Control Shift P |
| Insert list field This shortcut has the ability to either start a list or continue one that was previously created. Initially a number list will be created that starts at 1 and increases as you use the shortcut vertically. If you need to get more specific with your list, you can use it horizontally and use alphabetically sub-lists. | Alt Shift L | Control Shift L |
| Insert empty field Create your very own field that needs to be filled in. Once used, this shortcut will insert two closed brackets at the spot of your cursor ready to be used to create custom fields. | Ctrl F9 | Fn ⌘ F9 |
