About this lesson

Study the body language of great speakers to increase your awareness of how to effectively move and communicate.

  • 00:05 Okay, here's your first major piece of homework.
  • 00:08 I need you to go online, whatever video file sharing site is your favorite,
  • 00:13 You Tube, Vimeo, Daily Motion, whatever it is.
  • 00:15 And I need you to find three famous people, at least famous to you.
  • 00:21 People you like, you respect and watch them give a presentation.
  • 00:28 The only exception is don't find someone giving a speech behind
  • 00:31 a lectern at a graduation ceremony.
  • 00:33 But someone speaking on a stage where they can walk around or maybe even a TV show.
  • 00:39 I want you to find three people.
  • 00:41 It could be Oprah.
  • 00:42 It could be Ronald Reagan.
  • 00:43 It could be Bill Clinton.
  • 00:45 But find three people, Steve Jobs, that you already know something about them.
  • 00:50 You already respect them.
  • 00:53 And I want you to watch them give presentations.
  • 00:56 Now, it can be as little as three minutes.
  • 00:59 It doesn't have to be a long time.
  • 01:01 But here's the thing.
  • 01:02 I want you to watch without the volume on.
  • 01:08 I want you to really scrutinize what their body is telling you.
  • 01:13 How are they coming across?
  • 01:14 And I want you to take detailed notes.
  • 01:18 I want you to write down every single thing you notice that they're doing.
  • 01:24 I also want you to notice what you like.
  • 01:28 So if you like the way they move around the stage, make a note of that.
  • 01:32 Now if you don't like it, you can make a note of that, too.
  • 01:36 But, I want you to really be aware of what they're doing.
  • 01:40 I think you're gonna be surprised by how much people move, their face,
  • 01:45 their eyebrows, their head, their body, their neck.
  • 01:49 Certainly their legs if they're walking around the stage,
  • 01:51 but even if they're seated on a talk show next to Oprah.
  • 01:56 You will see a tremendous amount of movement.
  • 01:59 So, that is your first big piece of homework.
  • 02:03 Don't just focus on one.
  • 02:05 Don't pick a graduation speech or a press conference for
  • 02:08 someone that's behind a lectern.
  • 02:11 Find a situation where they can move more.
  • 02:14 Find people you already like and
  • 02:16 really study these videos in detail but turn the volume off.
  • 02:21 Make your list.
  • 02:22 What do you like?
  • 02:24 What's working?
  • 02:25 What do you think is effective?
  • 02:28 And if there's something you don't like put that down as well.
  • 02:32 If you're like most people you've never really watched a speech that way before.
  • 02:37 You're getting all the impressions from what you see and what you hear.
  • 02:42 I want you this time just to focus on the visual.
  • 02:44 So please do that now.
