About this lesson

How to continuously improve your body language in business situations.

  • 00:05 So we're coming to the conclusion of this Body Language for Business People course.
  • 00:09 I hope you've gotten a lot out of it.
  • 00:12 You may forget some parts, you might not agree with me on some parts.
  • 00:16 But there are a couple of things I really, really want you to take to heart.
  • 00:21 For starters, you've got to practice anything you do in a business setting,
  • 00:26 presentation, speech, talk, media interview, networking event.
  • 00:30 Practice on video, watch it, keep doing it until you like it.
  • 00:37 If you do that, it's very difficult to be nervous.
  • 00:41 If you remove the nervousness from the equation,
  • 00:44 chances are your body language will be perfectly fine.
  • 00:48 As I mentioned to you in the very beginning,
  • 00:51 there's a lot of nonsense out there about body language.
  • 00:54 If you point your toes this way, it means your lying and
  • 00:56 you gotta obsess the whole mill, the person's gonna think I'm lying.
  • 01:00 It's a whole lot of nonsense out there about body language and
  • 01:04 I want you to not lose focus.
  • 01:06 I want you to instead focus on what's most important.
  • 01:11 Make yourself completely confident that you're coming across your best.
  • 01:14 Reduce the nervousness.
  • 01:16 If you aren't nervous, you are going to avoid 99%, if not more.
  • 01:24 Of the problems people get themselves into
  • 01:27 with their body language in business situations.
  • 01:29 So practice on video, keep practicing until you love what you see.
  • 01:34 Keep practicing, watch it without the audio on, so that you're convinced
  • 01:40 that you looked professional, you looked comfortable, confident, likeable.
  • 01:45 And that you would make a great impression
  • 01:48 with the business people you're meeting with and the impression you want to.
  • 01:53 Now, to take it one step further, I want you to take your best video and
  • 01:58 send it to other colleagues, people you respect.
  • 02:01 Not necessarily close family members, but
  • 02:05 send it to people you respect their judgement.
  • 02:09 Don't even tell them why you're doing it.
  • 02:11 Send them the video of your practice of a speech,
  • 02:15 a media interview, a one on one meeting.
  • 02:17 Or maybe you simulated practicing in front of one other colleague.
  • 02:21 Send it to people you respect, ask them to watch it, and then call them.
  • 02:27 And just say, what stood out, what did you like?
  • 02:31 Try to find out the strengths, don't just ask them what they didn't like.
  • 02:35 Listen to everything they said.
  • 02:38 And if they focused on what they liked, the messages,
  • 02:42 that's often an indication that your body language was perfectly fine.
  • 02:47 If they do say, I hated the way you moved your hands,
  • 02:51 a professional speaker isn't supposed to move their hands.
  • 02:53 Here's where you want a second and a third and a fourth opinion.
  • 02:56 If you asked ten people, one person may say they didn't like your answer.
  • 03:01 They didn't like you walking around on the stage.
  • 03:04 The other nine might not comment, but
  • 03:07 in my experience they actually liked what you did.
  • 03:09 So, don't over correct just based on what one person said.
  • 03:15 But listen to everyone, get as much feedback as possible.
  • 03:22 And try to get to the point where you're completely confident,
  • 03:25 you know exactly what you want to do.
  • 03:27 And that you're coming across the way you want to come across.
  • 03:32 And finally, as I started out in this course,
  • 03:34 remember body language is critically important.
  • 03:39 But it's not the only thing that matters, it's not the most important.
  • 03:43 When you are meeting people in business situations, you have to
  • 03:47 really communicate the fundamental value you bring to the process.
  • 03:53 Why should they hire you?
  • 03:55 Why should they do business with you?
  • 03:56 Why should they invest with you?
  • 03:58 Ultimately, your message is what's most important.
  • 04:03 Your body language can increase the odds that people will
  • 04:06 be receptive to your message.
  • 04:09 And can focus on your message and feel good about you.
  • 04:13 So remember, it's always about the style and the substance, put the two together.
  • 04:18 Come up with great messages and great body language.
  • 04:23 And every business meeting, speech, media interview you do will help your cause.
  • 04:29 Good luck.
