Quick reference

File, New

Easily find pre-designed templates in MS Word for letters, resumes, posters and more.

When to use

Rather than designing your own flyers or business letters from scratch, let MS Word help you with the catalogue of pre-designed templates. This is a time-saving feature that you have access to free-of-charge and with no copyright infringement (because you paid for the MS Word program on your computer.)

Instructions

1. Click the FILE ribbon

then click NEW

The Search box appears at the top of the screen.

2. In the Search box, type the topic to find: “Thank you letter” or “Resume“.

Notice all instances of that topic are displayed.

3. To open a template, double click it. To pin it to the top for future use, click the tiny push pin on the corner of the thumbnail image.

4. Edit the document as necessary, save and print.

  • 00:04 I want to talk to you about the File ribbon.
  • 00:06 There's some great information in here.
  • 00:08 One of them is the new section.
  • 00:11 So when I click on File, it gives me this blue banner, and
  • 00:14 a lot of times we'll go straight to open to get our files.
  • 00:17 But if you take a look at the word New and click on that one,
  • 00:21 there are thousands of pre-formatted templates that you can use.
  • 00:25 Absolutely no copyright infringement, not royalties, do it all,
  • 00:29 just use these as you find you need them.
  • 00:32 This is why we have a subscription in Microsoft,
  • 00:34 'cause we get access to these great templates.
  • 00:37 Now I wanna focus on the business because maybe I'd like to write a business letter.
  • 00:41 And I don't have any letterhead pre-designs,
  • 00:44 I'm gonna find something in here.
  • 00:46 I'm gonna have to go right over here and hit Letters, so
  • 00:49 I'm not seeing envelopes or forms, I just want business letters.
  • 00:53 Now I can scroll, scroll,
  • 00:54 scroll until I find something that I think looks professional.
  • 00:57 So let's see this one, this looks great.
  • 01:00 I'm gonna go ahead and click on this particular letter.
  • 01:03 And I'm going to hit Create and here it opens up.
  • 01:06 I'll move that onto my screen so you can see it.
  • 01:09 All right, now notice right over here it has my name,
  • 01:13 a Company Name, a Company Address, it's prompting you to change these things.
  • 01:17 Showing you where this information should go, you should just change, and
  • 01:20 I noticed I'm not clicking and dragging these.
  • 01:22 When I click once, it highlights the little field.
  • 01:25 These are preformatted fields.
  • 01:27 And you could just start typing in there, today's date or whatever.
  • 01:30 They might be questioning how does it know my name?
  • 01:32 Well, when I click on the File ribbon again, File, I'm on the Info section.
  • 01:37 And take a look right over here, my name is already registered to
  • 01:41 this Microsoft Word, so that's where I got my name from, right?
  • 01:45 I can change that if I want or continue finishing typing my name.
  • 01:49 And notice, right in here, you have all the,
  • 01:52 you can reformat the text of this, whatever you want.
  • 01:55 But the beauty is I'm going to hit the print preview button which is right over
  • 01:59 here, the quick print.
  • 02:00 When I hit quick print, I better Cancel that, I wanted the print preview.
  • 02:04 So I better go to File and Print, here we go.
  • 02:08 This is what it will look like when I print this, okay?
  • 02:11 That's a great letter, I would be proud to send that letter out.
  • 02:14 But not so fast, let's go ahead and find a new one, I'm gonna close this.
  • 02:20 Don't save, I'm gonna go back to File and New, and
  • 02:24 this time let's say you're looking for a job, and you want to type a resume.
  • 02:29 And you have no idea how to format a resume, well, guess what?
  • 02:32 Microsoft Word does.
  • 02:33 So in here, here are all the resumes.
  • 02:36 You just choose which one you want to submit.
  • 02:39 And believe me, HR departments are never going to turn away your resume
  • 02:43 because you used a Microsoft template.
  • 02:44 In fact, they'll probably be very proud of you for using a template.
  • 02:48 I'll go ahead and click on this one, hit Create, and
  • 02:51 now look at on in the screen, here we go.
  • 02:53 You just go ahead and replace your name, your script and
  • 02:57 your education history, and your work history.
  • 02:59 Just replace it in here and then submit it.
  • 03:02 Now's your choice, you can print it and mail it,
  • 03:06 or Save it as a PDF and upload it.
  • 03:08 So just so you know, be proud of the work you do, and
  • 03:11 let Microsoft help you with that work.
  • 03:14 All those templates again are found under File, New, and
  • 03:18 it is really fun looking through there.
