About this lesson

Best practices and techniques for how to pace and end a speech.

  • 00:05 That's it. Any questions?
  • 00:06 Okay now I can go sit down.
  • 00:09 That my friends is the absolute worst way to end a speech.
  • 00:14 When you're giving a presentation the first thing you say is going to make
  • 00:18 the strongest presentation but the last thing you say will make the second
  • 00:22 strongest impression so you need to have a good ending and
  • 00:27 you need to pace yourself throughout the whole presentation
  • 00:31 here are the two biggest blunders most people make when they are presenting.
  • 00:36 Their pace is too quick throughout.
  • 00:39 They didn't do a good enough job editing down their messages, so
  • 00:43 they have way too many messages, way too many slides for the time allotted.
  • 00:48 So they're speaking too quickly, it's rush, rush, rush.
  • 00:52 They get to the end of their data points and they're like, that's it.
  • 00:55 That's it, any questions?
  • 00:57 Boom.
  • 00:57 It's too abrupt, it's like a plane just
  • 01:01 zooming along 600 miles per hour just stops, crashes.
  • 01:06 Or a car going along the highway just runs out of gas at 70 miles an hour.
  • 01:11 Not pretty at all.
  • 01:13 So two things to keep in mind.
  • 01:15 When it comes to your pace, you need variety in your speech.
  • 01:18 Sometimes faster, sometimes slower.
  • 01:21 Sometimes louder, sometimes softer.
  • 01:24 There needs to be variety throughout when it comes to your pacing.
  • 01:28 When you finish your speech
  • 01:31 you need to really let people know that you've given it some thought.
  • 01:36 Now, there's no one perfect way of ending,
  • 01:38 but a story that summarizes your main point can be a great way.
  • 01:44 Something that inspires your audience to do what you want if nothing else
  • 01:49 just summarize your main points again.
  • 01:55 So let me leave you with this.
  • 01:56 You're going to have a lifetime of presentations and
  • 02:01 every single one of them can be great if you do one thing.
  • 02:05 Record, practice your speech on video.
  • 02:09 Until you love what you see.
  • 02:10 Do that and you'll be a great presenter each and every time.
  • 02:15 Good luck.
  • 02:18 That's how I end many of my presentations.
  • 02:21 I'm just summarizing a key point.
  • 02:23 Try to do it in an uplifting way.
  • 02:26 And letting people know yes, I've actually finished.
  • 02:29 I didn't just run out of gas, I didn't run out of new bullet points,
  • 02:34 but I gave some thought to it.
  • 02:36 Do that and you will be in great shape.
  • 02:40 Plus, practice your whole presentation on video, and
  • 02:44 you can see your ups and downs and fasts and slows, and the occasional
  • 02:50 pause will make your pacing go perfectly.
