About this lesson

Most effective methods for rehearsing your speech to get results.

  • 00:04 So how should you rehearse your speech and for how long?
  • 00:09 Well the most important thing about rehearsing is you've heard me stress again
  • 00:13 and again you've got to rehearse on video.
  • 00:18 Now here's the thing people don't like doing that well tough.
  • 00:22 I don't like cleaning my garage.
  • 00:23 But if I don't clean it, it's gonna be cluttered.
  • 00:25 There's simply no way around it.
  • 00:27 I don't like proofreading memos.
  • 00:30 But if I don't hit spellcheck first, I'm going to be humiliating myself.
  • 00:33 It's the exact same thing with speeches.
  • 00:37 So writing and re-writing text is some preparing and rehearsing a speech.
  • 00:41 Reading and
  • 00:42 re-reading editing slides at a Powerpoint isn't helping you rehearse your speech.
  • 00:48 You have to rehearse the speech in a specific way.
  • 00:51 No, saying it in front of the mirror doesn't help.
  • 00:54 Just talking in front of your dog doesn't help.
  • 00:58 You have to speak and you have to do it on video, and you have to watch it.
  • 01:04 Here's the thing, you've got to keep doing it again and again and
  • 01:08 again until you love what you see.
  • 01:12 Till you're convinced this is the best you can possibly be
  • 01:17 with the speech you have and the topic you have and the time frame you have.
  • 01:21 That's what's most important.
  • 01:23 Now for some of you, you might be able to do it in two takes.
  • 01:26 Some of you, you might have to do it in a hundred takes.
  • 01:29 I don't care.
  • 01:30 Your audience doesn't care.
  • 01:32 You've got to keep on doing it until you love what you see.
  • 01:35 Now, if you want to take it up a notch,
  • 01:38 practice in front of a couple of people who are representative of your audience.
  • 01:44 And then when you're done, ask them what they remember.
  • 01:47 If they don't remember the exact messages and the exact stories and
  • 01:51 slides that are most important to you.
  • 01:53 You've gotta redo it until they get it right.
  • 01:57 Now, if you wanna take it up one more notch, try to practice in the actual room
  • 02:03 where you will be speaking, so if you're speaking to a big convention in front of
  • 02:07 a thousand people, don't show up a half an hour before the speech is to be given.
  • 02:12 Show up the day before or the night before.
  • 02:14 Get in there early in the morning, so you're familiar with the room, the setup,
  • 02:18 the sound.
  • 02:19 Walk around the room.
  • 02:20 Do those things, and you'll be in great shape preparing for
  • 02:24 your next presentation.
