About this lesson

Become a better speaker by rehearsing your presentation on video.

  • 00:05 I hope you're having fun so far.
  • 00:08 I hope you're enjoying yourself, but here's the part where you're
  • 00:13 not gonna like me again cuz I have to be brutally honest.
  • 00:16 If you're just watching me, listening, even taking notes, not gonna help.
  • 00:23 You're not going to become a better speaker, you're only going to improve
  • 00:28 if you actually take these principles we've discussed,
  • 00:32 come up with a presentation, deliver it, record yourself and watch it.
  • 00:36 And I know you don't want to do it.
  • 00:39 People don't like doing it, even if they pay me a ton of money to
  • 00:42 fly halfway across the world and show up in their office or their home to do it.
  • 00:46 So I know you don't want to do it,
  • 00:48 unfortunately it's the only way to get better at these skills
  • 00:54 because if you're just watching me, it's really nothing but entertainment.
  • 01:00 And I don't mean to knock myself, but believe me, there are a million
  • 01:04 people you can be watching online who are a lot more entertaining than I am.
  • 01:08 So, if you picked me just for
  • 01:09 entertainment, you have made a profoundly bad decision.
  • 01:15 But I can help you speak more effectively, but you gotta work with me.
  • 01:19 So I'm asking you nicely, in fact, I'm begging you, don't go to the next
  • 01:24 lecture in this course, don't fast forward, don't start reading the books.
  • 01:30 Instead, drop everything, come up with a new outline, as we discussed.
  • 01:36 Have it on a single sheet of paper.
  • 01:38 Try to incorporate as many of the best practices I've highlighted
  • 01:44 in this course so far, and then I need you to give a presentation.
  • 01:49 Most important, I need you to record it.
  • 01:52 Pull out your cell phone, you can hold it yourself.
  • 01:54 If you want, you can prop it up against a wall, use a webcam,
  • 01:59 an iPad, you can have a friend or family member record it for you.
  • 02:04 Again it doesn't matter,
  • 02:05 the quality of the camera, all that matters is that you can see yourself.
  • 02:09 So I need you to record yourself giving this new version of your presentation.
  • 02:16 I need you to watch it, and then I need you to write down or
  • 02:20 type a list of everything you liked about what you see.
  • 02:26 If you liked that you sounded conversational or your stories or
  • 02:29 your examples or that you moved naturally, write it down.
  • 02:34 Give yourself credit.
  • 02:35 Don't just focus on the negatives.
  • 02:38 I want you to be a harsh critic of yourself, but
  • 02:41 I want you to be a fair critic.
  • 02:43 And a fair critic gives equal time, points out the good and the bad.
  • 02:48 So list everything you're doing well, then write everything you don't like.
  • 02:53 What's wrong?
  • 02:54 Are you boring?
  • 02:54 Are you too monotone?
  • 02:57 Is it uninteresting?
  • 02:57 Is it a data tub?
  • 02:58 What is it?
  • 02:59 Write down exactly what you don't like.
  • 03:03 Then I need you to do it again.
  • 03:05 Try to do more of the good stuff.
  • 03:08 Do less of the bad stuff, and keep a list.
  • 03:13 Judge yourself again.
  • 03:14 Write down the good, write down the bad.
  • 03:17 Ideally one list is getting bigger, the other one Is getting smaller.
  • 03:22 I need you to do this at least half a dozen times.
  • 03:27 Keep doing it until you're convinced this is the absolute
  • 03:33 best you can do with your current skill set based on the insights
  • 03:39 I've given you based on your own reflections, based on your own practice.
  • 03:44 Please don't go to the next lecture until you do.
  • 03:47 You're wasting your time.
  • 03:48 Why do you wanna waste your time?
  • 03:50 Don't go to the next lecture until you've recorded your presentation,
  • 03:55 critiqued it numerous times, and you're seeing progress and
  • 03:59 you're convinced it's the best you can do.
  • 04:02 So please do that right now.
