About this lesson

Become a better speaker by rehearsing your presentation on video.

  • 00:00 Okay now it's time to rehearse telling your story.
  • 00:08 You know the drill.
  • 00:10 You know it's not enough to practice it out loud in front of a mirror,
  • 00:14 in front of your dog.
  • 00:15 You've got to practice it while recording with your trusty cell phone,
  • 00:21 iPad, laptop, whatever you want to use.
  • 00:23 Don't worry about telling a full speech beginning, middle and end.
  • 00:27 PowerPoint slides any of that, just focus on introducing one idea,
  • 00:33 telling the story to make that idea come alive.
  • 00:37 Make sure your story has a character, someone you can talk to,
  • 00:43 some dialogue, what you said to that person, what they said back.
  • 00:47 A setting, how you felt about it, a conflict,
  • 00:51 a problem, and what the resolution was.
  • 00:56 Deliver your story, record it,
  • 00:58 watch it, figure out what you like, what you don't like.
  • 01:03 Yes, focus on all the stylistic things, but more important,
  • 01:06 make sure you have all of the story elements.
  • 01:10 And then do it again.
  • 01:12 Keep doing it until you love how it comes across.
  • 01:14 Don't worry about memorizing it or making it sound exactly the same each time,
  • 01:19 as long as the basic point comes through, and the elements are all there.
  • 01:23 That's what you're looking for.
  • 01:24 Once you have a video that you really think represents you well,
  • 01:28 and Is a good and interesting story.
  • 01:31 Send it to a few friends.
  • 01:34 Ask them to watch the video just once.
  • 01:37 And then call them or email them, and
  • 01:39 ask them, what did you remember from this story?
  • 01:43 And what did you think the point of it was?
  • 01:46 If they get your point and they remember the story you succeed.
  • 01:51 You win. You did a great job.
  • 01:53 If they say I looked at that and I don't really remember or
  • 01:59 hm, it was an interesting story, but I don't really know what it related to.
  • 02:05 Then we have a bit of a problem.
  • 02:06 It should be obvious to your audience exactly what the point was of your story.
  • 02:12 And they should remember not every single detail, but they should remember the big
  • 02:17 points of your story, they should remember the contours of your story.
  • 02:22 So, if they don't get it, let's try the story again.
  • 02:25 If they do get your point, and the story elements, then you have proof.
  • 02:30 You have evidence that your story-telling abilities are in great shape.
