Create Simple Vizualization Sheets
In this video, you'll learn to create a simple vizualization.
When to use
Do this any time you want to create a simple vizualization.
Instructions
To create a vizualization, go to the Worksheet Screen and drag pills from the Sidebar to the top "Rows" and "Columns" shelf.
Hints & tips
- Creating simple vizualzations with tableau is incredibly easy!
- Just drag and drop dimensions and measures to the top "Columns" and "Rows" shelf of the Worksheet.
- 00:04 Okay, in this video, we're going to start to create our first visualization,
- 00:07 our first worksheet.
- 00:08 We've sort of played around with it up until now.
- 00:10 We've kind of dragged and dropped some items into our shelves up here for
- 00:14 quick visualizations.
- 00:15 This video, we're really going to jump in and go for it.
- 00:17 So let's say we want to know the number of breeds, the dog breeds and
- 00:20 their sort of breakdown.
- 00:22 So we can grab breed from over here, bring it over here to our column or row,
- 00:25 I'll just pick columns right now.
- 00:27 And we've got a list here.
- 00:29 If we bring it down to rows, this might be a little easier to read.
- 00:32 We could see we've got a list of all the things.
- 00:37 Now, it just says ABC here because we haven't aggregated this into any sort of
- 00:41 count or anything.
- 00:42 This is just listing all of the breeds that we have in our data set, so
- 00:46 very cool.
- 00:47 We can kind of look at that.
- 00:48 Now, let's say we want to know how many of each one.
- 00:51 So we can come down here to our count, this is the count of our data and this is,
- 00:55 Tableau has created this for us.
- 00:56 It kind of went through our data and said, okay this seems to be what
- 01:00 all these things are, let's add them all up and create a count for each one.
- 01:03 So we could drag that to columns and now we have our first visualization.
- 01:07 Well, technically probably our second one, but
- 01:10 you can see we can hover over this and we can see there are 2500 pit bulls.
- 01:15 We can scroll down and you can use the scroll here on the right or
- 01:19 I'm just using the wheel on my mouse to scroll down, German shepherd 2,928.
- 01:24 That's kind of cool and very neat.
- 01:28 Now we're going to learn going on how to customize these.
- 01:31 How to make them more readable and more usable.
- 01:34 How to change this stuff around so that for instance,
- 01:37 maybe the big ones here, for instance, 5,700 Labradors.
- 01:40 Maybe we want that one at the top.
- 01:42 I'll show you how to change the position all this stuff going forward.
- 01:46 In this video, I just want to kind of touch on how to get started and
- 01:49 how to do this.
- 01:50 Now, like I said earlier to get rid of these,
- 01:52 we can grab each one of these individually and pull them out.
- 01:55 Or if I bring this back, there's a button right up here.
- 01:59 If I hover over this, this is the clear button clear sheet.
- 02:01 You can just do that and boom it gets rid of them just like that.
- 02:05 So super quick and easy.
- 02:06 So let's bring this back.
- 02:08 Let's go read and see count.
- 02:11 So this is a bar chart.
- 02:13 This is the standard sort of default chart that you get whenever you
- 02:16 create a visualization in your worksheet.
- 02:18 And we can come over here to the show me button right here in the top right corner.
- 02:22 If we click on it, we have a bunch of other options.
- 02:24 So I think we looked at pie chart earlier.
- 02:27 We can get this.
- 02:28 We can look at this tree map, which is really handy to see at a glance,
- 02:34 it does sort of filters for you by size.
- 02:37 So the biggest one is Labrador Retriever.
- 02:39 If we hover over it, we can see 5700,
- 02:44 Lab Mix 5500, German Shepherds 2900, mixed is the all time biggest one: 9,400.
- 02:49 Very cool.
- 02:51 So that's the tree maps.
- 02:52 We can look at the packed bubble chart, same thing.
- 02:57 And it's really just that easy.
- 02:59 Now, you'll see some of these are grayed out because they just don't work for
- 03:03 the particular set of data that we're using.
- 03:05 And you'll notice with some of these, for instance the packed bubbles.
- 03:09 You notice our columns and rows up here, this shelf is now empty.
- 03:12 Those pills, these round things are called pills here,
- 03:16 have been dragged over automatically down into our marks table.
- 03:21 So some of the charts and graphs require it like this.
- 03:23 Others like the bar chart require you pull it up here.
- 03:27 Generally speaking, you want to grab everything and
- 03:30 pull them up to your columns and rows and
- 03:31 then click over here to change the chart and it will change it for you.
- 03:35 You can see it's brought them down here into the marks card.
- 03:37 So very cool.
- 03:38 That's how to create a worksheet.
- 03:39 Now if we wanted to create a separate one, so for instance, we've got the dog breeds,
- 03:44 maybe we want to create another visualization for colors, for instance.
- 03:48 So we can come down here and just click on this new worksheet, and boom,
- 03:52 we see worksheet two pops up.
- 03:53 And we could just now grab whatever we want.
- 03:55 So if we want colors and again count.
- 04:00 Well, there we go or we can move this around.
- 04:02 Let's do that, okay?
- 04:03 And maybe this one, we want to be a tree map.
- 04:07 So we keep it like this.
- 04:08 We can toggle back and forth between these.
- 04:10 Maybe we want to switch this one back to a pack bubble.
- 04:14 There we go.
- 04:15 And we can right click on these and rename them.
- 04:17 So this one might be dog breeds and
- 04:21 this one we can rename to, let's say, dog colors.
- 04:29 And very, very cool and just that easy.
- 04:31 ll It really doesn't get much harder than this.
- 04:35 This is all Tableau is in a nutshell.
- 04:38 If you can do this, you can use Tableau.
- 04:40 And from now on, it's just a matter of tweaking these things, adding labels,
- 04:44 changing colors, changing layouts, filtering by different ways.
- 04:47 We could look at the filter cards and the pages cards, but
- 04:50 this is the gist of Tableau.
- 04:52 Now there are of course, much more stuff that we can learn.
- 04:54 We can learn how to, not just create worksheets, but also dashboards, and
- 04:58 animation, and things like that.
- 04:59 And we'll get into all that going forward.
- 05:01 But this is the nuts and bolts of Tableau, and if you can understand how to do this,
- 05:05 which I think you'll agree, is pretty simple, up until now,
- 05:07 you shouldn't have any trouble learning the rest of this stuff.
- 05:10 So that's all for this video.
- 05:11 In the next video, we'll look at resizing some of these charts and
- 05:14 changing colors and headers and things like that.
- 05:17 And that'll be coming up in the next video.
