Report View, Design View, Layout View, and Print Preview

Application Terminology

Report View

Report View displays a report without pagination, like one long web page.  Report View does not run all the code behind the report.

Print Preview

Print Preview shows a report formatted for paper.  Use the navigation controls in the lower left to move to first page, previous page, next page, and last page.

Layout View

Layout View is a combination of Report View and Design View.  It shows data while giving you limited design capabilities.

Design View

Design View is the most important view for designing reports.  This is where you have the most control.

Switch View of a Report

  • To switch between different views of a report that is open, click the View drop-down on the HOME or DESIGN ribbon.

  • 01:53 Click the time type textbox and shift-click the label.
  • 01:57 0.6" is too narrow to show the label caption. Make it wider.
  • 02:04 Look at the Width for the Work Date textbox.
  • 02:07 It is 0.8 so make the label 0.8 inches as well.
  • 02:13 On the Home ribbon, with the label and textbox for WorkDate
  • 02:16 still selected, click Right Align in the Text Formatting group.
  • 02:22 Right Align content for all labels and textboxes for numbers.
  • 02:27 Set the Width for time type and its label back to 0.7 inches.
  • 02:33 Set the Width for Time and its label to 0.9 inches,
  • 02:38 and Right Align the content.
  • 02:40 Right Align content for Rate and its label too.
  • 02:44 Select all labels and click the object Left Align on the QAT.
  • 02:50 Do the same for the controls in the detail section.
  • 02:53 On the REPORT DESIGN TOOLS, FORMAT ribbon,
  • 02:56 set the Shape Outline to light gray.
  • 02:59 Drag the right border of the report in
  • 03:02 to close up the extra space.
  • 03:04 Save the report and look at the Print Preview.
  • 03:08 Change to Layout View
  • 03:10 and change the Caption of Time Type to Type,
  • 03:13 since it is shorter and the data is short.
