General Cell Control

The data and text you input into Excel can do much more than act as placeholders within cells. Shortcuts in this section will expand your capabilities of cell control far beyond what your mouse is capable of. You will be able to do everything from locating cell matches to creating tables.

Open general help Wherever you are in your spreadsheet, you can get immediate help on anything Excel related with the click of a button (or two for macs.) F1 /
Undo previous action Make a mistake? Easily backtrack and delete any edits you did not mean to make in small and manageable increments. Ctrl Z Z
Redo previous action Quickly add back any edits or controls you accidently deleted. Ctrl Y Y
Copy selected cells Add any formulas or words in a given cell to your clipboard. You will be able to paste them to a new cell with ease. Ctrl C C
Paste clipboard content After you have copied the content of a cell to your clipboard, use this shortcut to paste the content to a new cell of your choosing. Ctrl V V
Cut cell No longer need the content of a cell? Simply selected it and use this shortcut to delete anything you had previously added. Ctrl X X
Repeat previous action Easily carry out an action you previously enacted as many times as is necessary. Any action can be repeated, from text wrapping to font edits. F4 Y
Display "paste special" box If you are attempting to paste from your clipboard in a specific matter, such as an HTML link, use this shortcut. You will be presented with options to paste in the format that best suits your needs. Ctrl Alt V Option V
Display find feature The find feature can be used to search for any content that is within your spreadsheet. Pop open this feature to both locate whatever it is you are looking for, and subsequently replace it Ctrl F F
Display find and replace feature Want to replace certain content with your spreadsheet. This shortcut opens up the Excel feature that allows for instantaneous replacement of that which you searched for. Ctrl H Control H
Locate previous match Conducting a find search for something specific with your work? Quickly jump to the previous available match for your search. Ctrl Shift F4 Shift G
Locate next match Same as above, but this shortcut brings you to the next, rather than previous match. Shift F4 G
Create an embedded chart Select the cells of data that you wish to work with, and use this useful shortcut to create a chart with ease using the data you picked. This chart will appear on the spreadsheet you are actively using. Alt F1 Fn Option F1
Create a chart in separate spreadsheet Similar to the shortcut above, this shortcut also creates a chart based on the data you selected. The only difference is that this chart will appear in a new spreadsheet. F11 Fn F11
Toggle the auto filter Turn on off the customizable auto filter for a range of data that you select. The auto filter allows you to filter by a diverse set of numerically-based criteria. Ctrl Shift L Shift F
Begin filter Once your auto filter is set to organize your data the way you wish, you can activate it by using this simple shortcut. Alt Down Control Down
Insert table Like the shortcut that creates a chart based on a range of data you select, this shortcut allows you to create an Excel table. Either select the cells you wish to extract data from, or manually type the range after implementing the shortcut. Ctrl T Control T
Select table row In order to make collective changes to all the cells within row, use this simple shortcut to automatically select all the data within that row. Shift Space Shift Space
Select table column Make edits to an entire column just as you can with a row. Ctrl Space Control Space
Select table If you are working on a table, this shortcut allows you to quickly select all the data within that table. Ctrl A A
Snap to selected grid If you have control of an Excel object such as a graph, chart, or text box, use this shortcut to snap it to the Excel grid. Use this shortcut to size objects with pinpoint symmetry within cells. Alt
Hide or show table or other objects This shortcut can be used to hide from view any Excel object including charts, graphs and tables. These objects also can return to view when the shortcut is used again. Ctrl A A
